GDMBR Jasper to Whitefish with support vehicle
« on: April 11, 2020, 05:37:35 pm »
I have ridden the GDMBR self supported/camping from Whitefish to Flagg Ranch and Salida to Pietown. Considering the Jasper to Whitefish section with 2-3 friends and looking for information on feasibility of having a support vehicle meet us at camping spots.  Would allow us maybe a few more miles per day and ability to do some side trips. And we're getting older.  Would be switching off driving so would like to meet up every night but could also do a few days totally self contained if necessary. Thanks for any suggestions on any part of the trip.

Feasible from Banff thru Montana.  Only difficult spot would be from Spray Lake (?) Area south of Banff (just before Elk Pass) to Elkford. I haven't looked at the map,  but you can't drive over Elk Pass. I think you'd also want to head from Sparwood to Fernie and then back towards the route.

Pickup truck or SUV would be best.

A few other spots that would require more roundabout driving, but doable.

How many miles per day?

Thanks Iowagriz!
Yes I see that's a long way round for a vehicle, but nice country. Depending on climbing, 35 to 55 miles would be comfortable.

If you plan on taking the backcountry route through the Flathead Valley in British Columbia, that's another section where your support vehicle can't follow you through. But if you take the alternate route through Fernie, that's no problem at all.
