The Paw Paw Tunnel on the C&O Canal towpath is closed due to construction work. It will be closed all summer, and probably through the fall of 2018. Detour routes are available for hikers and bikers. Information about the 1.5-mile hike and climb around the closure is at https://www.nps.gov/choh/planyourvisit/pawpaw-closure.htm

The trail detour is pretty brutal - up and over a steep ridge - esp. with a loaded bike.
A nearby dirt road detour saves miles and may prove easier.

According to the C&O Facebook page, the Paw Paw tunnel has been reopened until some time in June.

Meanwhile torrential rains and flooding are wiping out sections of the C&O towpath east of Antietam Creek.

Thanks for the alert. It looks like at this time none of the closures due to the rains are affecting this route.

We would advise cyclists to keep an eye on the situation through the park service link. Conditions can change quickly.

Torrential rains are causing problems downriver from PawPaw. The rains should relent in a couple of days but the towpath will be a mess for several days afterward. The towpath is closed for a short stretch downriver from Brunswick. The C&O Canal Facebook page is being updated several times a day by the National Park Service.
