Following the 2017 Eagle Creek Fire in the Columbia Gorge, sections of the Historic Columbia River Highway and State Trail are damaged, closed and/or are being repaired. Updates are coming soon to the Historic Columbia River State Trail web page.

In addition, there is construction on I-84 impacting the route through Summer 2019. You can follow that progress and get more specifics at the Oregon DOT Road & Weather Conditions map page.

Due to both of these situations, you will need to ride the Washington Option between Biggs and Portland, OR (maps 104-108). The (toll) Bridge of the Gods at Cascade Locks (map 106) allows bicycles if you wish to cross there when riding Eastbound. The surface is gridded steel and cross winds are likely. You may also cross at The Dalles on US 197 (regardless of direction of travel). US 197 has no shoulder and is subject to the same cross winds. There is a sidewalk on the east side of the bridge which we've heard can accommodate a fully-loaded touring bike.

This situation has been clarified since the original posting. Cyclists may ride through the construction on I-84, though delays should be expected. More information on the multiple construction projects occurring in the Columbia River Gorge may be found here:

If you wish to cross the river at Hood River, we have been made aware of a bus that will accommodate you and your bicycle (Monday, Wednesday and Friday only), Gorge TransLink. See www.gorgetranslink.com/transit-klickitat.html to make a reservation.
