Marathon Supremes...

Ok, I'm ready to buy new tires for my Trek 520. I have almost 2k on the tires that came on the bike and although I'm sure they have a lot of life in them, I want to put on a new set before my transam trip this summer. I was going to just buy the same tire, but have decided to go ahead and go with the Marathon Supremes. My current tires are Bontranger AW1 700 x 32. I assume I would buy the 11600787 32-622 (700 x 32C) V-Guard from the list below as the correct replacement? Thanks.

What tire width are people touring with.  Planning for almost all paved with a bit of gravel.  total bike and gear = 45lbs.  also, are the Marathon Supreme tubeless compatible?

Depends on the gravel, though I'd start with 35s.  On pavement I'm comfortable with 32 - except those gosh awful expansion joints in Kansas and eastern Colorado; 3" might be ok there.

I do not know if the current production of Marathon Supremes is all tubeless compatible; I do know there are new Supremes being sold that are tubeless and new Supremes being sold that are not.

Do not have the sypremes burt the Almotions (50mm) - and before that Little Big Ben's - 40mm. Even though I mainly ride tarmac, packed gravel I prefer my Almotions over the Little Big Ben's. Simply because they are more comfortabel. The difference in width I do not notice on the road but gives me the advantage, should I come across some dirt road, loose gravel that it is not a problem to ride it.

Must say that I do not ride tubeless for me it has no advantages over non-tubeless.

I have had mixed experiences with the 35mm Schwalbe Marathon Supremes that I'm using on my Novara Mazama. As previous folks have written, you can't really beat them for their combination of low rolling resistance and high puncture protection. I used them on the TransAm two years ago, and only had two flats (both of which I suspect were due to shifting rim tape). I continue to use them while commuting and doing some lighter touring here in the northwest, and never worry about flats. That being said, they have worn faster than I was expecting, especially given their steep price. Perhaps this premature wear is due to the heavier loads I've toured with, or the fact that I usually use them in conjunction with a tire liner. Either way, I reported some of the wear anomalies to Schwalbe, and they were kind enough to send me a new pair free-of-charge.

I guess my overall sentiment is that they are excellent tires, but you (probably) won't get as many miles out of them as you will from other heavier tires, such as Mondials or Marahon Supremes.

Did you finish the TA with one set?  I would have considered that to be adequate life. 

My goal for tire life is a penny a mile.  1000 miles on a $10.00 tire or 5000 miles on a $50.00 tire.

Replaced my Bontranger AW1 700 x 32 with a new set of Marathon Supreme 700 x 32 today and took them for a 30 miler. I like them...seem to roll a bit easier than the stock Bontrangers. I have a little over a month to break them in before I head out on the TA.....hope they live up to the hype.

I've run Supremes on my touring bike on two, two thousand+ mile tours and then put them on my commuter bike. After literally thousands and thousand of miles, I have yet to get a flat. Amazing! I don't know if they are particularly fast, but they sure are durable.

I recently read an interesting article comparing the rolling resistance for just the Schwalbe Marathon Greenguard based on width of the tires.

Interestingly, of the four sizes evaluated (32mm, 37mm, 40mm, and 42 mm), the best rolling resistance was the 37 mm tire size for the Schwalbe Marathon Greenguard.

Wish the same article was done on the Schwalbe Marathon Supreme tires.

Been using Supremes for years on tours.  After a tour, I put them on my commuter bike. Thousands and thousands of miles and absolutely no  flats. Amazing, really.
