« on: April 10, 2018, 10:55:21 am »
caution advisory on US rt 9 in Hyde Park NY - part of the ACR route (section2 map 19) and also NY state bike route 9 - there are sunken storm drains in the shoulder - cyclists should be aware of this - also US rt 9 is a busy hwy

Rt 9G better for cyclists. Rt 9 is used to access Roosevelt Museum. If don't need to be on east side of Hudson R., less traffic on the west side (avoid Rt 9W).

Thanks. Should be riding it in early June. It wasn't in the best shape a few years ago. Fortunately, you are not on it for that long. Hopefully repair will be made soon.

FYI: The route was changed through here in the 2017 edition of the maps. We now route onto SR 9G.

To learn about more changes to Atlantic Coast Route Sections 2 & 3, see this blog post:

yes indeed NY SR 9G is better and there are several places for ice cream on 9G - Carla Majernik had contacted me about changes to the ACR in the Mid Hudson Valley NY - mostly the Harlem Valley Ductchess county section - most likely I had suggested rt 9G in Hyde Park as well - another benefit of 9G is that you can visit the 2 Roosevelts homes - on 9G is Val Kill ELEANOR and via the un-paved Farm Lane trail to US rt9 - there is a traffic light at the trail head and a ped crossing (Hyde Park Brewery/restaurant is nearby) - the Wallace center has bike racks and there is no charge - the FDR home there is a fee for the tour - I haven't gotten up to speed with the precise details of the changes to the ACR here in Dutchess county

here is the video slide show of my BYPD 2016 ride which went to the above from the Walkway OTH (also part of the ACR - see my other post in regards to construction at west end)

I'm glad you caught this! Thanks. Through a miscommunication in the office, the files didn't get uploaded to the Map Updates & Corrections. They are there now. Be sure to look at the MUC for the version prior to the new one to find them.

Best,
Jennifer

Looked at the new routing south of New Paltz and am torn. On the one hand, That stretch south of town was incredibly bucolic and, when I rode it last, nearly traffic-free. But it does leave you greatly exposed to headwinds (ask me how I know), and there are basically no services until Bloomingburg. On the other hand, the new routing adds trail miles, and there appears to be more services. Can't wait to check it out.

But what this part of the route could really use is a tunnel between Bloomingburg and U.S. 209. Making that climb up to Otisville into strong, gusting headwinds is no fun.  ;D

Just got back. 9G is much better and takes you right to the walkway.

The Wallkill Valley Trail, not so much. Nothing to look at and a not-so-nice surface that was overgrown in many places and had hard to see rocks embedded. In several places it becomes a single track ride. 208 in Wallkill is banged up in places. I nearly wiped out on a broken shoulder. Getting back to the former routing there was a good deal of traffic, no shoulder and a couple of short, nasty hills to start on Bruyn Pike. This new route adds about 4.5 miles and about 350' of climbing. It also cuts out what I remember to be a lovely stretch of riding south of New Paltz. Overall, it seems like trail mileage for the sake of trail mileage, resulting in a net overall loss of pleasantness.

I will also add this route observation: Adding the trail mileage on the Harlem Valley Trail between Amenia and Wassaic is nice, but if you have 32c tires or better and like virtually car-free riding there is no need to loop around through Mabbettsville. Deep Hollow Rd. off of SR 343/22 a little beyond the end of the trail is a treat. The surface is virtually all hard pack dirt with one very short, flat section of gravel as you close in on U.S. 44. The early part is steep, but then the grades ease and you eventually plateau. The road is mostly shaded and very pretty. Got passed by only two moving vehicles. Heading south, make a right on U.S. 44 and a left on Shun Pike in 0.3 miles. That will put you back on route, and you will pass Rally Farms, which you miss with the new routing using CR 98 to Shun Pike. Save 8 miles and nearly 500' of climbing.

RE: BikeliciousBabe

interesting comments - RE: Deep Hollow Rd. - yes this is a nice road albeit a Mid Hudson Valley Hill From Hell - the reason I did not recommend this road is the very steep grade - the up-hill is one thing but the DOWN-hill could be dicey with a fully loaded touring bike - I speak with experience - about 30 years ago I attended a bike rally at SUNY New Paltz and on one of the day rides to Mohonk Mtn. House I rode the carriage trail UP to Smilely twr I had 27 X 1-3/8ths tires, the uphill was OK with the triple gearing on my bike BUT I had trouble on the very steep sections of the DOWN hill - the bike kept skidding

RE:the WVRT yes indeed it is more like a mtn. bike trail than a developed (and paved) multi use trail - the south section is actually not that bad when compared to the section north of Rosendale and Williams Lk. I think the issue for Ulster CR 7 is that left turn across NY state rt 299 out of New Paltz to get onto the county road which could now be a paved alternative route - to believe it or not, the WVRT north from New Paltz will be a part of the Empire State 'Trail' (I use quotes because some of this 'trail' will be a bike route on state and other roads)

RE: SR 9G - yes much nicer than the 4 lane US rt 9 - did you see Rita's Ice Cream? I think it is still there at Haviland Rd. (haven't gotten up there yet - have been going to the Frozen Caboose in Highland Ulster County near the Hud Val RT) - 9G also allows one to visit the OTHER Roosevelt place  - Val Kill Eleanor and from there could ride as an alternative side route the un-paved (but much nicer ride than the WVRT) Farm Lane trail to US rt9 - and the FDR home etc. also the Hyde Park Brewery - lodging, and a chain supermarket Stop&Shop - could go back to rt 9G via the Farm Lane Trail

PS: construction of the extensions to the (paved) Hudson Valley RT is well under-way

On the subject of Section 2, heading south I have taken to crossing the Delaware from Portland, PA to Columbia, NJ via the bike/ped bridge then riding south on U.S. 46 to Manunka Chunk Rd., which is the first traffic. Making a right there and then a left at the T onto Market St. puts you right back on route in Belvidere.

The reason I started doing this is that the official route on the PA side of the river has no shoulder, and there are a couple of places with not so great sight lines.  U.S. 46, on the other hand, has a wide shoulder that is in good shape except for maybe the first half mile south of Columbia. (I didn't scope out the northbound shoulder.) There is more traffic, but it wasn't crazy busy when I rode it on a Friday around 10 a.m. The tradeoff is that it's not scenic like the official route, but there is a terrific farm stand. Scored some strawberries that had been brought down from the field that morning.
