Great Divide Section 3 Map A - road closure July 2018
« on: July 03, 2018, 12:04:36 pm »
A portion of FR 532 between turn G and turn H is closed due to road slumping. The detour around it is to follow the Wind River Alternate, noted on the map.

Another road that has the potential to be closed, but isn't as of today, is Brooks Lake Rd. just east of Togwotee Pass, between turn E and turn F. If it is closed the detour is to stay on US 26/287.

What is road slumping?  Just tell it to sit up straight!

There's a nice article with the long answer at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slump_(geology)

Short answer?  Slow-motion landslide.  The land either above or under a road starts sliding downhill.  As I've heard it used, it's usually a wash under the road, which then starts to collapse.  Pavement breaks, dip forms, maybe part of the road collapses and you've got a gap in the pavement.

Did Wyoming get that much rain or snow to threaten two places that far apart?

Thanks, Pat, for answering John.

And John, sorry I thought you were kidding.

Thanks.  Sounds like a wash out to us flat-landers in Oklahoma.  I still say you just need to get them to sit straighter :).
