Houston to Southern Tier Westbound

In February we will fly in to Houston to pick up the Southern Tier and go to San Diego. I've been looking for a good connection starting near the airport (Humble) and going to Navasota or La Grange but have not found anything attractive.
Could anyone help me out with a good connecting route?

Haven't ridden near the airport in many years, so can't help you with the immediate area, but if you can get to I-45 and Hwy 242 near The Woodlands its a nice ride west on 242 to FM1488, which curves west then southwest and pick up US 290 in Hempstead.  Good luck - I'm jealous!

If you can't get a decent route, you might try renting a car one-way from IAH to the west side of Houston and ride from there.

This is one of the largest metropolitan areas in the USA, and among the fastest growing.  A nice little country road can, in just a few years, be overwhelmed by motor vehicle traffic from a new subdivision, shopping area of place of employment.  When upgraded, the road system is optimized for moving large volumes of motor vehicles efficiently.  The geography is cut up by bayous and they seem to have a reluctance to build bridges.  The city bus system will take you back into town (the opposite direction from the ST).  You're going to have to shuck and jive with a bit of traffic.
