California Coastal Trail Redwoods State Park

Hi All,

Does anyone have experience cycling the California Coastal Trail through Del Norte and Prairie Redwoods State Park?  I've been reviewing the route recommended by Adventure Cycling which mostly adheres to Hwy 101 and park detours, but I was wondering how rough or difficult the coastal route is (where apparently bikes are allowed).  We are planning to be fully loaded and cycle to San Diego on touring bikes - can they handle the trail?  Or should we stick to the main park roads?  I'd love to avoid the traffic in summer and enjoy nature more.  Any recommendations?

I rode this very route two years ago during August . The traffic wasn't bad at all. One of the greatest experiences of my riding life was getting up at dawn as the fog was lifting and riding through the Redwoods. Absolutely no one else around. Dead quiet. It was like riding through a cathedral. So beautiful, I almost wept.
