On map 26, US 101 north of Brookings between Pistol River State Scenic Viewpoint and Harris Beach State Park is closed due to a landslide and collapsed roadway. The ground continues to be unstable and is closed to ALL traffic. It is uncertain what the timeline may be for repairs.

Photos of the damage and more information may be seen in these two articles:

https://www.oregonlive.com/commuting/2019/02/dramatic-landslide-still-blocking-us-101-north-of-brookings.html

In the meantime, Carpenterville Highway/SR 255 is the only nearby route option.

To learn the current conditions of the slide and see a map of the detour, go to Oregon's Trip Check website & zoom in on US 101 north of Brookings:  https://www.tripcheck.com/Pages/Road-Conditions

Oregon DOT notes this about the route:
Quote
Carpenterville Highway is a detour but it is a steep, winding road with steep grades and an elevation change of 1,700 feet. Motor Carrier Enforcement officers are on either side of the highway to enforce length limits.

This website has a few pictures taken along Highway 255: http://www.corcohighways.org/highways/or/blog/?p=625

Wikipedia has a short article on Highway 255: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oregon_Route_255

We are in touch with Oregon DOT and will post more information on the situation when we have it.

We don't yet have any more information about a timeline for repair of US 101 but we were sent this video showing more of the damage:

Moments after sending that last post, I received this from ODOT:

Quote
Carpenterville is paved the entire length minus 300’ or so of gravel at the top.  All of the traffic that would use [US] 101 is currently using this narrow, winding road so we encourage folks to consider traveling during non-peak commute times.  The contractor can’t start building a temporary road on [US] Hwy 101 (which will be gravel) until the slide stops moving, it’s currently still moving about 1’/hour (it was 2’/hour earlier this week) and we need it to be in the 2-3”/hour range.

Latest reports are that the slide movement continues to slow. Hopefully the contractors can start work soon.

We've heard from ODOT and US 101 has reopened with one gravel lane, increasing to 2 soon followed by temporary paving this summer. A bigger project will ensue at an undetermined time.

From TripCheck:

Quote
Comments: Traffic is reduced to a single lane, and controlled with a temporary traffic signal. Expect delays and use caution. The bridge is limited to a single lane of traffic until summer 2019. A temporary signal is in place to provide traffic control. Expect brief delays.
