ACA maps with audio turn by turn directions
« on: April 10, 2019, 10:54:20 pm »
Hi is it possible to get audio directions along with the ACA map on my iPhone  like a google map?  I am riding part of rt66 in Illinois and Missouri next week. Thanks

If you purchase the GPX data for your chosen Adventure Cycling route, you can upload the data in to RideWithGPS.com (using the Private setting, please) and via the process outlined by RWGPS, you should be able to generate audio cues for the route. (You will need a Basic or Premium membership to use this feature.)

https://ridewithgps.com/help/voice-navigation

CAVEAT: These are automated cues and probably not 100% reliable.

You should be familiar with GPX data and how it works for best results all around. This is not a process for the faint of heart. =)

Best,
Jennifer

I cannot find embedded cues. I found that with RideWithGPS you have to take the time to "trace" the route to generate cues (making it even less reliable). Am I missing something? I would prefer not having to take the time to do that. I am surprised there are not cues already in the gpx files?

it seems to be implied at the bottom of the RWGPS directions for using our GPX data that voice navigation is possible.

Thanks Jennifer but in order to get to that point in RWGPS you have to trace the route. what i was wondering was if there were cues already in the gpx maps from adventure cycling. having to trace the route is time consuming and can lead to user errors too. i would think the ACA maps would have the cues in them.

Hmm, I wouldn't think you'd have to trace the route if you've purchased the data from us and are importing it to RWGPS.

There must be something I'm missing.

It's not you that's missing something, it's the GPX file and I did purchase it from ACA - it's all the southern tier maps

If you are uploading the ACA GPX files to RideWithGPS as described in these instructions, https://ridewithgps.com/help/working-with-aca-files, you will not have to trace the route, it will get created in RideWithGPS based on the GPX data. Make sure that you are uploading the track file and not the services file to get the route line.

You are correct ermadness, at this point you do have to use the route editor to place markers on the correct streets to force the route to follow the track and not make its own decisions based on the basemap. The number of points needed depends on the area of the route and does require some zooming in and out to make sure that the correct route is being used. The current GPX files do not include the cues, but it may be something we can provide in the future.

Hello,

Just for FYI. Based on my knowledge of ACA GPX data the files are just the track breadcrumbs. To get a navigable file with RWGPS you have to import this "track" and then turn it into a "route" by tracing it. I believe that the tracing function is mostly automatic but don't know if it can be done on a phone or must be done on a PC.  Once this is done I believe that the software will provide voice navigation.

However, there is a new alternative on the horizon. Locus ver 3.42 has the capability already implemented to provide to provide turn-by-turn voice navigation. However it needs the turn information to be added to the GPX file. See:

https://forums.adventurecycling.org/index.php?topic=15909.0

So far I have not been able to get with Jamie to pursue this further. We have both had a busy fall. Maybe the new year will provide another opportunity.

Thanks,
Steve
