NYC to Albany
« on: March 07, 2019, 01:49:07 pm »
Currently, I am planning for the Summer, if it ever gets here.  Does anyone know about bikes as luggage on Amtrak from NY Penn Station and Albany?
Thanks in advance

Yes you can.  Just go to Amtrak and act like you are booking a ticket and you will see your options, some of which include luggage and roll-on bikes.  Tailwinds, John

Thanks.  Amtrak's Robo-Info-Gal is less than helpful.
May break in NYC for a day or two, then possibly take Metro North just to get out of town

Oh I totally agree the Robo-Gal is unhelpful.  I just play around with the Booking a Ticket section to see what comes up.

I always check to see what trains go to where I want to go and then check out the schedule.  There is one train that goes from Penn Station to Albany, Empire Service, that is set up to take bikes.  Probably have to make a reservation to reserve a spot for your bike.

Pretty much all you need to know is right here:

Note that bike service on the Lake Shore Limited is not available to/from Albany. Maybe choose a starting point along the Vermonter, which has carry-on service. I have used that twice. Quite easy, but you need a reservation.
