Spare tire?
« on: March 31, 2019, 10:41:18 am »
Bikepacking the great divide this summer with my daughter from Banff to Whitefish. We’re set up tubeless and we’ll each bring a tube for back up. Just wondering if it’s a good idea to bring a spare tire in addition or if I’m being overly cautious. Thanks for any info.

This is one of those personal trade-off things. Since your trip is only 250 miles, the risk is quite low, especially if the tires have low mileage when you start.

I don't always, but typically do carry a spare tire in case of irreparable damage. I've been lucky. Every time I have not carried a spare, I haven't needed one, and every time I have carried a spare, I have needed it. But I've needed the spare often enough that I like the comfort of having it.

IIRC that section includes some pretty remote stretches, and pictures I've seen more resemble "imagine-a-path" than dirt road at times.  It'd seem reasonable to me to carry at least one spare tire between the two of you, in addition to tire and tube repair kits.

How comfortable are you with tubeless and repair? I've done that section twice, both times with new tires. The only place to pick up a spare would be Fernie.

However, if you are comfortable and can patch a tire then install the tube, you'll likely be fine. I brought a tire boot and floss+needle to sew a gash if it was big enough.

A beautiful section of trail, enjoy the ride.
