Westbound Northern Tier, east of Glacier
« on: June 29, 2019, 04:45:02 pm »
I looking to modify the Northern Tier route going from Cut Bank to Browning before heading up to St. Mary's, thus avoiding the loop up to Cardston.  It looks like Starr School Road is paved the entire length from North Browning to its western terminus at Hwy 89.  Can someone confirm this?  I'm guessing there's a website that lets one know the condition of a road, e.g. paved versus dirt versus....   I don't trust Google Maps.  In Wisconsin, I started down a paved road that turned into a sandy ATV trail!

Do you realize that Cardston is the childhood home of Fay Wray (King Kong), and the site of the Remington Carriage Museum, voted "the best indoor attraction in Canada"? Do you really want to miss all that? They have a really good campground too.

The Delorme Gazetteer shows it as paved as well, not that they are always right. A quick phone call to the Starr-Browning Airstrip (on Starr School Road)  or county roads department will probably answer your question.
Bicycle southern Wisconsin next time. All roads in the south are paved (for milk trucks).

Benchmark Map atlas and Google streetview also indicate that Starr School Road is paved all the way.

It's paved. But Waterton Village, a short ways off route, is a great place for a day off. The Towne Campsite is in a dramatic setting. (Might want to make an advance reservation.)

Careful going through Browning. Sadly, there is a good deal of drug and alcohol abuse in the area. Also, traffic on U.S. 89 heading towards St. Mary might be heavy. At least there is a nice 6 mile descent into town.
