New route including Black Hills?
« on: July 12, 2019, 03:37:20 pm »
I have been scouring my ACA magazines and bike bits from the last year, trying to find the article that talked about the upcoming route (expected in 2020) that took in Wyoming and South Dakota, including the black hills.
Can anyone help?  It sounded like a great trip, and we were thinking of doing it in 2020.
Thanks,
Emily

I rode the Black Hills in 2015. Highly recommend:

Nemo Rd. out of Rapid City, but not on a weekend due to traffic.

Spearfish municipal campground as an overnight location.

The ride up Spearfish Canyon with a stop at nearby Roughlock Falls. You can then continue on through Cheyenne Crossing to pick up the Mickelson Trail at the Engelwood trailhead.

A tour of the mammoth site in Hot Springs is worth the price of admission.

So is the long walking tour at Wind Cave N.P.

Needles Highway. You can stay in Custer and do a day loop that includes Needles.

I started my trip from Rapid city in the middle of June to beat the crowds at places like Custer State Park. Seemed like perfect timing.

Are you thinking of this article about our Black Hills tour?

The research was just completed so I have yet to see what the final routing is going to be but it will take in many of the highlights from the tour, Bikelicious Babe's list and more!

Stay tuned for more information and a blog post about the latest research trip by Daniel Hansbury, our new safety coordinator.

Hi Jennifer,
Thank you for sending the article. It wasn't that one (though that is the article that really piqued my interest about the route). It was piece that shared two new ACA routes. The first was the Arkansas route being released 2019, and the second was a new route that went through Wyoming and South Dakota and more, expected to be released 2020.   I thought it was a Bike Bits piece, but not sure.
Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the info, Bikelicious. All sounds great.  Will keep that info for the future.  Riding through Wyoming and SD has been recommended by several people, so very much looking forward to it some day.

Emily,

The only other place I can think of right now where the new route would have been mentioned is in Jim's Letter from the Director. He mentioned both Arkansas and the two new routes in the hopper:

PS If you do an adventure on a route in that region, feel free to suggest a name for it. ;)

Yes, Jennifer, that is it!  Thank you for finding it.  I had forgotten about the delmar route, too, which made the Atlantic coast route more interesting for us.
I am super excited about the Yellowstone-black hills-twin city route because we really wanted to do a "next tier" below the Northern Tier.
Thanks again!

I remember WY having good shoulders when I did part of the TA back in 2000. In fact, I took a picture at the CO state line, where the shoulder ended. If you go to Google Maps Street View and look at where WY 230 becomes CO 125 (heading towards Cowdrey) you can see the difference.

Yes, Jennifer, that is it!  Thank you for finding it.

Yay! Glad I ease your mind about where you saw it.
