Replacement Rim Suggestions!
« on: July 19, 2019, 03:22:57 pm »
Hi All, I need to replace a rim that is cracked around the spokes.  This is my bike: http://www.bikes.com/en/bikes/whistler/2015 (Whistler 70)

I can't find any info on my current clincher rim (700C) for my 32mm tires.  I'm looking to replace it with a rim that is "fast" on pavement and can handle well on dirt and gravel trails.  I don't know much about rim profiles or rim technology, etc, so I'm looking for some suggestions on manufacturers of rims that perform well and aren't too costly.  Also, any links to info on how to choose a rim would be helpful too!  Thanks!

I have Mavic “OpenPro” rims that my LBS built for me.  They are 36 hole.  They have held up on gravel, rail trails and pavement.

Yo "Ko..." - I lost a rear rim and 'the' bike shop in Havre MT replaced it with a "Rhyno-Lite."
Said rim has worked well for many many miles / years since.
At the time that my rim was in the process of giving up the ghost,
I did not have the option of any comparative analysis &/or selection ....
just was glad at the time to  had any rim available.
Meanwhile ... have been satisfied enough over time with this rim to let you know that a Rhyno-Lite worked for me
and may be consistent with your requirements.....

- Best wishes in your research.

As far as "fast" goes, look to your tires.  A rim is a rim is a rim.  One may be a little bit lighter than another, but if you're running 32 tires, you've got a choice of tires, some of which weigh up to three times as much as lighter tires.

Mavic A321, Velocity Dyad, and Sun CR18 rims have worked well for me.  Pick one.

I had disappointing life with a Velocity rim but I'm still running several as Velocity is about the last holdout for offset rims.  But CR18s are my go-to rims.

The makes great rims, I recommend the "Velocity Atlas"  $96.00 per rim
or the "Velocity Dyad" $80.00 per rim

I've used Velocity for years. One failure which they quickly remedied. Running Dyads on my touring bike now for their strength and Quill on my other road bike because they are lighter and can take wide tires.
