I'm planning a September trip using the ACA Green Mountains route. As I go over the route, I'm looking at the East Alternate A section. CCW, approaching St. Johnsbury, the map has you take N. Danville Road, then get on US 2 toward St. Johnsbury. The mapping software I'm using does NOT want me to get on US 2. Is it legal to ride there?

Yes.

If you can handle dirt/gravel you might want to check out Old N. Danville Rd. to Gross Hollow Rd. to Old Prue Rd. to Mt. Pleasant St. as an alternative to U.S. 2. Some of the nicest riding in VT is off the beaten path. When I headed south from St, Albans last year I had several sections of peaceful and scenic dirt riding.

I love dirt riding! What other dirt roads do you recommend in the area?

I don't know any in that area. I looked up that alternative in response to your question. (You can see some of the roads on Goggle Maps Street View.)

In general, get off the main highways and bigger roads and onto small roads in areas where there are no big towns and you have a good chance of ending up on unpaved surfaces. That's just VT being VT. Headed south from St. Albans last years. South of Burlington I had a couple of days with several unpaved stretches, including some around Vergennes.
