An extensive process to repair the ramp system at the North Carolina Ferry Division’s Southport Terminal is now underway. Barring weather or other delays, ferry service between Fort Fisher and Southport is tentatively scheduled to resume Oct. 1.

If anyone can recommend a detour we would appreciate it.

We have heard from a local government official about a detour. Unfortunately, he DOES NOT recommend it. Plus with Dorian there is hurricane damage in the area.

"There is no good alternative.  Maybe get them to Downtown Wilmington, take WAVE Transit’s Brunswick Connector over the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge to Brunswick Forest, US 17 south to Hazel’s Branch Rd. to Zion Church Rd. back onto US 17 south to NC 87 south to Southport. I wouldn’t do it."

I'm not familiar with the Atlantic coast route, but the ferry from Fort Fisher to Southport is working. I was on it last week.

We just got word from NCDOT that the ferry at Fort Fisher/Southport will be closed again from Jan 6  (for appox. 6 weeks) for repair due to Hurricane Dorian.

Here is a detour:ridewithgps.com/routes/32064519 It's long but was suggested by a local cyclist. The other bridge crossing the Cape Fear River is not bike-friendly and cyclists can't use the I-140 bridge.
