Nogales to Grand Canyon - Early June
« on: December 01, 2019, 09:56:35 am »
Hello I’m new to this forum and in the process of planning a long tour from Nogales Mexico to the Canadian Border north of Glacier for 2021. I am a teacher so for me to do this trip it will have to be June/July. I will be piecing together ACA routes after the Grand Canyon.

My main question is about the heat. I have purchased the Grand Canyon to Nogales book (Stiles I believe) and will primarily follow this route from south to north. I will be east of Phoenix and in the national forests. Will these elevations mitigate the heat? Is this a foolish time of year to be cycling through the Arizona desert? Can anyone comment on this routing?

Here are the planned days using komoot...

I've ridden in Arizona in June so it can be done even if it is not the most comfortable/enjoyable.  To help with the heat you should start riding at sunrise.  Ride until about 11 then take a break during the hottest part of the day.  You could then ride in the late afternoon after it has cooled down a bit.  Carry and drink lots of water.  I have heard of riders that bring use lights and ride at night to avoid the heat.  Make sure to use sunscreen.  Good luck

Check out WeatherSpark.com.  It has a great wealth of climate data for most places in the world.   Tailwinds, John

As aggie said, carry and drink lots of water.  I've ridden or driven parts of the southern half of your route, and there's no services for many miles.  For instance, the north Tucson to Globe segment, I'm not sure there's a convenience store/gas station in Winkelman.  If there's not, you'll be knocking on doors asking for water if you didn't start the day with a couple gallons.

Also, June is the beginning of the monsoon season (officially).  If it starts storming, you won't be riding in the late afternoon.  OTOH, if it rains, the blooming desert is spectacular.

There is some wild and beautiful country up there!
