Routes from Glenwood Springs to Grand Junction CO

I plan on biking (on touring bike) from Glenwood Springs CO west to Grand Junction CO. The last 30 miles appears to have old Hwy 6 absorbed into I-70. Any recommendations for the final segment, short of diverting 20 miles out of the way? It could be that is the only alternative, but maybe someone has another more direct route. Thanks!

You are partially correct.  You will need (and are legally allowed) to ride on I-70, in places.  Basically, there are parts where you can ride on a path, i.e. around tunnels, that help avoid the really dangerous spots.   I would do two things before riding UP 10 miles then back down the other 10.

First, ask this question over on CrazyGuyonaBike.com.  I believe a couple of people live somewhat near there so they could probably answer with first-hand knowledge.  You could also search the many journals there to see what others have reported.

Second, I would scrutinize Google's maps satellite and streeview the entire length you are on I-70 to see where you can avoid it.  You should note that it is a signed bike route so while it may not be enjoyable, it should not be horrible.  Also, you will be going downhill overall so it should be somewhat quick.

In 1986, the Ride The Rockies bicycle tour rode from Grand Junction to Glenwood Springs, pretty much right down Interstate 70.
