A few years ago I read this great quote from a cyclist, Matt Pierle : A touring bike is like a flying carpet. It's a magical form of transportation that opens eyes and doors to both new horizons and new friendships.

There must be somewhere, a book of quotations about bicycles. I wonder if they view the bicycle the same way in China, where it is the main form of transportation for over 300 million people. I lived in China for years. Many lived in abject poverty by US standards. A poor person could expect to pay about $30.00 for a brand-new strong Hero bicycle, and he expected it to last for years.
