Is Flooding an Issue
« on: February 18, 2020, 10:32:17 am »
I will be riding from Colorado to New Roads to pick up the Southern Tier to get to Florida, I see there is a lot of flooding going on but the news can be deceiving as to how wide spread it is and the true nature of the damage. I was hoping someone in the area could tell me the real story. I plan to get to New Roads around the first of April. Hope no one has incurred any losses.
Thanks
Marty

You asked about points over a thousand miles apart. That's a lot of territory. Flooding is typically a fairly localized thing, affecting specific roads. When planning your route, look up the specific roads that you plan to use to see if there are any closures. Most of the flooding, if any, will be near major rivers--the Mississippi, Arkansas and Missouri.

My guess is that you won't have any problems. But things can change between now and April.

The flooding is occurring on the Pearl River.  It forms the boundary between Louisiana and Mississippi in the area of the Southern Tier route you will be taking   You cross the river on map 6-84 just after Bogalusa.  As John mentioned it's a long time before you will get to the area so the flood waters will most likely be gone by the time you get there.

What is most likely to be affected is camping.
Not only is the Pearl River flooding, but other rivers are high.
Most state parks and camping areas in Louisiana/Mississippi are along waterways.
Many are likely to be flooded this spring.
Even if the waters have receded, they are likely to remain closed until cleaned and repaired.
If you have camping plans, stay updated - consider alternatives such as CouchSurfing.

Fantastic info from everyone, just what I was hoping for. Thanks for the quick replies. I do plan on camping so I will look at that carefully.

Check with the LBS in the area. Usually, they know the routes and where the clubs ride and what's affected.
