GDMBR New Mexico in April?

Hi all,

I have been dreaming about the GDR for as long as it's existed and am excited  to start riding it in short segments when I have time.  I will be in santa Fe NM in early/mid April and have up to a week to ride.  I am interested in getting on the route at Abiquiu and riding southward possibly as far as Pie Town, then looping back using the two alternate routes along that section to see new trail. 
My first concern is riding through the elevation, especially between Abiquiu and Cuba, this early in the year...too soon?  Any advice greatly appreciated!
