APP of choice for GPX routes
« on: May 12, 2020, 02:07:58 pm »
I've never used a gps app before. What have others used that they are happy with offer good detail on the map and ease of use? I'm experimenting with All Trails at the moment. Will be riding the Idaho Hot Springs this summer and plan to download the gpx data and have paper maps.

If you have not already purchased the gpx files, you should consider downloading the ACA Navigator app (it is free) and purchasing the maps inside that app.  I am unfamiliar with other apps if you have already purchased other gpx files.

You could also ask over on CrazyGuyonaBike.com or on the BikeForums.net .

I like Gaia, easy to use and works offline (like most of them). Only caveat is to practice prior to leaving (my rookie mistake). I had practiced at home with cell service, didn't realize that I needed to download the maps for offline use (makes sense when said out loud).

I use Osmand - used a designated gps in the past and made recently a switch to Osmand. I like the fact that you can install Open street map as well as recording, importing and exporting your own tracks. Plus of course you can use it offline - the main important thing in a route app for me.

It takes a bit of time setting it up correctly but there are plenty youtube clips to help with that. Getting to know the app takes a bit of time (just like getting to know a gps).
