Sharing my process for finding short routes. What's your strategy?

I am all about the Google maps, and I wrote a post about how to get the most of it with an example.

I've tried OSM and some other tools, but they all leave me wanting more. I just wish I could more easily report bad data on cycling to google maps.

My minor disgruntlement with Google's Streetview is the lack of timely updates.  (What'd ya want for free?     )  They're usually pretty timely and relevant, but out in the countryside I sometimes find 13~15 year-old images - and I've found 9-year-old images in major downtowns!

That aside, I use Streetview a lot for planning/plotting rides.

Yeah, I'm spoiled with a new image every year in San Francisco. It's fun to look through the street view history and see how things changed.

I wish they did more "bike path view". I know they have the backpack version but they need the bicycle version too!

I like Google Maps too.  But be careful in very rural areas.  Sometimes what they call a road may be very rough, i.e. MTB only.
