Missoula to McCall Idaho?
« on: June 29, 2020, 07:34:54 pm »
Hey folks,

I'm planning on riding from Glacier National Park, to Missoula, and then to meet some friends in McCall Idaho in a few weeks.  I was able to get the "Great Parks North" Section 2 map which takes me to Missoula, but I'm not immediately finding any routes down to McCall.

Does anyone have some good suggestions?  I'm bikepacking but going solo, camping out, so I'd rather avoid any routes that might have single-track and means to give me mechanical trouble lol.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Don C.

Looking at gurgle maps, my initial thought is "You can't get there from here."

It looks like the most "direct" route would be to follow the TransAm route "west" of Missoula (map3?), then head south after Lolo Pass from Kooskia and pick up U.S. 95.  I have no idea what that stretch of 95 is like.  An alternative might be 93 south past Sula (next TransAm map "east) to Challis, then work your way west from there.  93 up to the pass has pretty decent shoulders, and you won't be slowing traffic coming down from the pass much.

What bike are you on? Pavement only, or gravel?

Can take bike path south of Missoula to Hamilton. I know gravel exists west of there (Wild West Route).

Otherwise agree with the above, Lolo Pass west then south.
