Northern Tier re-routed?
« on: June 26, 2020, 10:05:11 am »
On the interactive map page it appears that the Northern Tier has had a major re-route in Montana. I don't see anything in the blog about it, and the NT web page only refers to the 2012 change. Is there an update I'm not finding, and if so could someone point me toward it? Thanks.

They announced something a few weeks ago I think in the Bike Bits email.  Supposedly they had several comments that US-2 had increased traffic so they rerouted it.  I was on it last summer and had no issues so don't know.

It was announced in the June member newsletter. Here is a link: https://www.adventurecycling.org/sites/default/assets/email_assets/JuneMemNews.pdf

Traffic has gotten worse, and cyclists have been complaining about it and the lack of shoulders. Here is what a cyclist said: "We experienced Route 2 (the high line) in Montana, as a very dangerous road. As I'm sure you know, it is a two lane highway with cars going 70+ miles an hour with little to no shoulder. All three of our riders were almost hit and killed on this road because of the reckless actions of a driver. We rode as close to the side of the road as possible but still were in much danger."

The new route now matches the Lewis & Clark Trail routing from Great Falls to Circle, MT.

Thanks, I knew it had to be announced somewhere, but I was just not finding it.
