Camping Status in Big Sur and Elsewhere on Pacific Route
« on: September 09, 2021, 11:41:23 pm »
Hi,

I am about a month out from spending about 7-8 days biking the Pacific Coast route from SF to LA.  I am concerned however about camping at the parks. When I try to check the status of campsites on the web, particularly for the parks in the Big Sur vicinity, they almost all are reporting no vacancies. I also however read elsewhere that it should be no problem for a bicyclist to show up for a hiker/biker site. Thoughts?

If you pick a park with hiker/biker sites (not all state parks have them), and if the campground is open (most are still open as of now), then you’ll be okay.

I found that one does not need a reservation on Hwys 101 and 1 to State Parks if on a bike.  The exception would be if the roadway is closed.  This may explain the warning.  I'm not up to date on Hwy 1 but there have been catastrophic slides in the last few years where the roadway ended up in the ocean.  You might check with CALTRAN to see road conditions there.
