Transportina a tandemom
« on: January 31, 2021, 02:05:13 pm »
Planning to ride our tandem from St Augustine to Fort Lauderdale. Would like to ride train back, but it won't transport the tandem. Since we will only have what's in our packs, we have no access to packing. Suggestions/recommendations?

Welcome to the ACA Forums!

My suggestion is to rent a minivan.  Just roll it in and you are good to go.  You might have to take off the tandem's front wheel though.

Have a great ride.  Tailwinds, John

Have a bike shop box it up and ship it home for you?  Use shipbikes.com or bikeflights.com and box and ship it yourself?  All of those will be cheaper than using UPS or FedEx directly.

When we did a big tour on our tandem we had the luxury of getting tandem boxes from the shop we bought our tandem from.  We just asked them to save a set of boxes when they got a new bike in.  Then we shipped it using BikeFlights.  At the end of the tour we just got some boxes from a shop and packing tape, then constructed a franken-box for the frame and another for wheels.  Then shipped it back with Bike Flights.  The shop was nice enough to be the pickup point for Fedex for the shipment home so we didn't have to worry about it.  It was a couple years ago but shipping both frame & wheel boxes was only about $120 through BikeFlights.

If there is a Co-Motion dealer in your are ask them to hold boxes for you.  Those boxes are the best!

The ACA should lobby Amtrak to let tandems on. Our national transportation system should be enabling all types of green transportation.
Luggage cars almost always have room, as we found when loading ours onto the California Zephyr 2 years ago in Emeryville, Calif., where they did so happily. Then the Denver crew got mad when they unloaded it and now the Zephyr won't take tandems even though we can see there's plenty of room.
I take it your tandem isn't coupled? For a coupled tandem, you can buy two bike boxes from Amtrak for about $10-15 each, then pay for two boxes.
