DRH, it is best not to leave your phone number on here since I learned the hard way that there are some ways that it can be scanned some how by "bots" and then you start getting a bunch of spam calls.  Maybe alter the sequence, i.e spell out some numbers and put the 602 elsewhere.  I sure hate spammers.

Note- we stayed at Gila Bend prior to heading to the Phoenix area.  A friend had recommended taking 238 to Maricopa and then 347 to Chandler.  While most of 238 was a fantastic ride (even though it was all slightly uphill with a tailwind), the last 10 miles or so were the worst of our entire trip due to no berms and very heavy truck traffic to/from the landfill just west of Maricopa.  DO NOT use this route even though it looks good from the outside.  Perhaps it would be ok on a Sunday and maybe a Saturday.

Has anybody actually done this new reroute and blogged about it? Doesn’t sound very pleasant. I am planning to ride the ST starting in early March and am thinking I may be better off sticking to the old route where there appear to be more services and because it’s better documented abd more scenic. I assume it will be best to ride this section on weekdays. Thanks!

I'd ne interested to hear too.  I actually enjoyed the old route including the supposed problem section, so I'd be inclined to stick with the old route myself.  I guess I am more traffic tolerant than some.  Also I loved the type of rollers that were there.  They suit my style and make me want to hammer and play boy racer.  I know some found that section to be a nightmare section.

I did the route back in Sept. Stuck to the original route without any issues. There were a few trucks on SR 78 but you know when they're coming and they give you room.
I've never had issues with semis and wish Adventure Cycling would quit making them sound like their always some huge risk.

If they feel the need to reroute the ST, how about coming into Austin and then the rest of east TX?
Like leaving La Grange on a road with zero shoulder and constant traffic in both directions. I made my own route taking back ranch roads.

Or leaving Shepherd where I again made my own route on the US highways, that ACA feels the need to warn you about even though there's very wide shoulders.
A rider was killed on the route outside of Shepherd a few days after I passed through

I too did the same route about 5 years ago and while we didn't have too much issue, we were mid-week.  I talked to the convenience manager in Glamis and he said that the traffic is a lot worse on weekends.  I am not worried so much about the semis as with the weekend RVers who may not know the edges of their rig while they haul a dune buggy (or two) on a trailer while heading home after a weekend of partying. We only had a couple of close encounters on that road mid-week but I sure would not want to ride it on a weekend.

Instead of ranting at ACA, you might draw up a suggested route on RWGPS and give ACA the pertinent info as to why it is better, i.e. it has shoulders, lower traffic count, X miles difference, more/less services, etc. so ACA can make a decision as to whether it makes sense overall.  They are more than willing to listen to riders and locals and that is how the routes get a change usually. Sometimes I agree, sometimes I don't but they usually do it for safety reasons and I am all for that.  Note that sometimes they reroute may not take place until the next map printing or only be shown in the Addendums page.

For instance, I proposed a few changes in my area due to the original route being on heavy traffic with no shoulders and showed them why I thought it was better.  They rerouted the route as a result. Luckily, it was about the time the route was being reprinted.

Carla,

Is this detour no longer applicable?  The reason I ask is I thought it was permanent yet when I look at the Interactive Network Map the map still shows the original ST routing.

Thanks, John

Yes the detour is still applicable. SR 78 is a safety issue. Since we haven't updated and reprinted the Southern Tier map section 1 yet, the Interactive Network Map hasn't been changed.

Carla, +1 on the thanks for all you do!
Have y'all gotten any reports from members on the detour vs. the old route?
This aging tandem team plans to tackle the ST this fall and eager for compare/contrasts.
