GDBMR - How to get to start?
« on: February 08, 2021, 04:49:00 pm »
Hi All,

Hoping the Canada boarder will open this summer.

How do others get to Jasper? We live an colorado and was wondering if anyone has ever rented a one way car, and if so, by whom? 22 hr drive... Long, but not undoable.

Thanks!

Tom

I took a shuttle ("Banff Transporter", if I remember correctly) to Banff for my start. Flew into Calgary with bike in a fatbike box with most equipment, kept it boxed on the shuttle and reassembled at the Banff YMCA.

With the overall popularity of Jasper, I'd think a similar shuttle exists. Good luck and have fun.

Thanks for the suggestion.  Some more details:
1) Looking to start in Jasper
2) There will be 4 of us!

Just started to look at flying with the bikes, seems possible. I've avoided it up until now, but this trip might require it.

At least the Denver to Calgary flight would lessen any potential luggage problems. No doubt a non-stop.

Looks like Sundogtours.com has service to Jasper, but also looks like Covid has limitations on them. Assuming the border is open, the bus service might still be limited.  A one-way rental car within country is probably easier and cheaper then from Denver.

You might also check out the Whitefish Bike Retreat. Cricket (owner) does shuttles to Banff. I'm not sure if she does them to Jasper, but anything is possible for a price :)

Thanks! Yes, it's the price part that I'm working on!

Appreciate the suggestions!

The only non-stop flight is united. Not a bike friendly airline! Alaska has a connection through seattle.

If you fly into Calgary, you can arrange a one-way car rental with Avis (only company that I know to do this) from Calgary to Jasper. It is almost as cheap as the bus (cheaper if there are two of you) and much more convenient. And the drive between Banff and Jasper is spectacular (so much so, that it is almost a shame that the GDMBR takes you on Alberta Hwy 40 - personally, having done both multiple times, I would lean towards the highway route).
