Westport OR to Champoeg SP

Is there a way to do this without going through Portland? From the RWGPS map route 47 looks promising, has anybody done that?

Yes.

Follow Hwy 105 south from Westport to Raymond
Then take US 101 south to Hwy 4 (well before Ilwaco)
Take Hwy 4 east to Cathlamet
Then take the ferry across the Clumbia River.
East on US 30 to Clatskanie
Then south on Hwy 47 to Vernonia
Next the Banks Vernonia Rail Trail
Lots of options after Banks

Westport is a nice starting point.
The waterfront on the bay is pleasant - with distant views of the Olympics.
Then there is a paved bike trail along the dunes on the beach with ocean views.

47 is a good climb from the from the waterfront and then a screamer of a downhill, no real services until you get to Vernonia. You can camp in the 2 city parks with RVs or at a primitive site at Vernonia Lake. At that point, you can join the Vernonia-Banks rail trail. You can also camp at Stub Stewart State Park. If you get off the most direct route, there are many places to stealth camp.

There are a few ways to get in to Newberg, low traffic but no shoulders to speak of, hwy 47 has the highest speeds and traffic volume but not really that bad, logging trucks are the exception. There are a number of gravel options that get you away from traffic but add some distance.

Looks like the OP asked for directions from Westport Oregon whereas you gave directions from Westport, Washington. If that's the case, Westport OR is the "town" that is at the Oregon end of the Columbia River/Puget Island ferry. So the OP can start directions from there.

Quite right. I'm planning on riding from Seattle to Eugene so Westport WA would be a bit of a detour.
