The Flattest Route for a Rowbike tour

Hi All,

While I have enjoyed touring in relatively mountainous areas, I am considering trying to plan a week-long tour with one of my sillier bike finds: a Rowbike. Ideally, I'd be doing around 50-70 miles a day.

The Rowbike works like an Erg with Wheels. For how stupid it looks it is actually a lot of fun!

anyways, I am looking for a flatter route ( it doesn't handle climbing very well)- ideally someplace that is pretty. I can travel on dirt or asphalt and am hoping for a route nearer the Westcoast.

Any Ideas?

Eastern Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Western Nebraska, Western Kansas, Oklahoma, Eastern Colorado, the Katy Trail, the Erie Canalway, most rails-to-trails. I'd probably opt for the Katy Trail or the Erie Canalway, both of which would make a great week-long tour. I'm not aware of anyplace on the west coast that fits your requirements. The Southern California coast (Santa Barbara to the Mexico border) is not excessively hilly, but there's probably more traffic than you'd like.

Rail Trails are pretty good for 'flat'.  At 50~70 mile/day, though, lovely trails like Idaho's Coeur d'Alenes will be about a day and a half tour.

Put something together using the developing network of trails of the Bay Area Trails Collaborative?

Minnesota and Ohio have hundreds of miles of paved trails and you could easily put together a week tour.  They're hardly near the west coast, though.

Well, you could start pretty nearly anywhere on US83 and ride in either direction* for a week.  Caveat:  while 1.2% of us think this runs through the heart of God's country, 93% of cycletourists would rather have a root canal than tour US83.

So mull this over and get back to us with needs refinement and compromises, okay?



*Personnally, I'd head downwind.
