Northern Tier 2015 Map 7
« on: March 06, 2021, 06:57:18 pm »
I have the 2015 version of Northern Tier Route paper maps.  When looking at my Map 7 the route sticks to the IA side of the river and then enters MN going north.  The Interactive Network Map  shows the Northern Tier Route now crossing into WI from IA near Lansing.    I don't see any mention of this in the Map 7 Updates & Corrections posted on the web site.  Are route changes like this typically included in the Updates & Corrections for recent maps,  or do you need to repurchase the maps to benefit from route changes?  If the latter I think it would be convenient if they provided some overview of route changes between recent version to decide if it was worth purchasing the updated map.

I would say wait until Monday and see how the ACA staff responds to this.

In Nov. 2019 we published a route update to section 7 to improve safety. We had been receiving complaints about increasing traffic on the west side of the Mississippi River. The new routing is located in Wisconsin on the east side of the river beginning at the river crossing to Red Wing, Minnesota, and ending at Lansing, Iowa, for a distance of 130 miles. It covers 6 map panels. This new routing features 19 miles on Wisconsin’s scenic Great River State Trail.

We don't mention extensive updates like this in the Map Updates and Corrections sheets. I would suggest you purchase the newest version of the section if you are planning to ride it this year. Services do change, and your map is now 6 years old.

Your suggestion of providing an overview of any major route changes is a good one. We will discuss this amongst the staff.

A great route it is and entirely within the Driftless Area. Once you leave the Mississippi Valley it gets hilly! The term "driftless" indicates a lack of glacial drift, the material left behind by retreating continental glaciers.
Perot State Park is a great place to camp along the Great River State Trail. Good food in Trempealeau at the Trempealeau Hotel https://www.trempealeauhotel.com/. Fantastic food coop in La Crosse https://www.pfc.coop/. I was on the board 40 years ago when it was 1/10 the size.  For fun continue on the Wisconsin side and take the ferrry at Cassvile. You call it by pushing a button if it happens to be on the Iowa side. $2.00. Holds only a few cars-or tractors. https://cassville.org/ferry/. It looks larger than the last time I toured through there.
Another good reason to continue on the Wisconsin side is the two state parks for camping: Wyalusing where the Wisconsin River enters the Mississippi at Prairie du Chien, and Nelson Dewy near Cassville.
You'll love the ride along the Mississippi and welcome to Wisconsin!
