Lake Superior

I am a long-distance bike rider living in St Paul, MN- born in Milwaukee though. I am working on a volunteer basis with a Canadian non-profit- the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail Association that is trying to develop a paved shoulder along the north shore of Lake Superior! The organization has asked me to write a short article about cycling the US part Lake Superior to promote the project. The trouble is that I have cycled only bits around Duluth, MN and Ashland, WI. I am wondering if you know of anyone who has cycled the US route or the whole lake? I would like to interview them for the article. There would be a small remuneration. It was way back in 1989 when I rode the south shore of Lake Superior.
A North Carolina boy who had never been that far north before.
I camped a few nights at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.
I had spent many days at the seashore looking out to the horizon,
but I was utterly unprepared for a lake so immense.
And a sunset that reflected every color in creation
from the lake's turquoise, mineral-rich waters.

Well, jamawani, maybe we crossed paths in Pictured Rocks back in 1989! During the summers of '88 and '89, during my college years, I lead week long self-contained backpacking, cycling and canoe packing trips for 13-14 year-olds out of a camp located in Western Michigan. The backpacking itinerary those years took us through Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. It was two 21 year old guys leading 12 (mostly) well behaved campers! Great memories, beautiful place.

A cycling route around the Lake would be fantastic. Would love to go back to that area sometime.

I live in Grand Marais on the north Shore of Lake Superior, and am an avid cycle tourist.  About 5 years ago my wife and I toured the perimeter of Lake Superior. I would guess that there is decent shoulder on about 50% of the route from Duluth to the Canadian Border, and there is completed bike route on maybe 50 miles called the Gitche Game bike trail.  This is also part of the US bike route system, which I believe is number 41, so that may be a source of info.  I am currently on a 4 month bicycle tour (started in mid May, rode out to Seattle, down to the Columbia River Gorge, and now heading back in east, currently in Walla Walla, Washington)  I don't get to check my email all that often but would be happy to talk to you any time, especially when I return home in late September
