The shower wash is the most effective for me when I am between laundry visits.
(Make no mistake - a real laundry visit is like hitting a Swedish spa.)
But in those case where necessity requires some cleaner clothes I do the shower wash.

You just go into the shower fully clothed and start soaping up from head to toe.
Then you rinse from head to toe, peel off each item, and hang over the shower bar.
Shower as usual, then wring out all of your clothes as much as possible.
A plastic grocery bag is adequate for toting the wet clothes back to the campsite.

BTW - It is usually helpful to have something dry to wear on the way back.

Once in a while I used a sink or shower to hand wash. Mostly I used a coin laundry. Once I went nine or ten days with no shower and wearing the same clothes. I got used to it. After a while it felt fine. Someone offered me a shower in a hostel in Lviv, Ukraine. The rest room was so filthy nasty I took a look, got a whiff, turned around and walked away. I would go a lifetime unwashed if a pig sty like that were the only place to wash myself.

Heh. One time I left my off-bike pants back at my campsite.

One of the things I always liked on campsites in France was finding an old fashioned scrubbing board built into the laundry sink.   Very useful.
