ShipBikes switching over to UPS
« on: April 13, 2022, 12:47:32 pm »
Seems like ShipBikes.com has lost their contract with FedEx…

Website is currently down with this error: “Sorry for the inconvenience. We have paused our service while we transition our system over to our UPS partner. We'll be back next week.”

It’s unfortunate because FedEx was always a lot cheaper than UPS. Last week I obtained a shipping quote from ShipBikes for my bike/gear from Denver to Philadelphia for a cost of $71. The same details on BikeFlights, using UPS, is $158. More than double! I’m regretting not purchasing the label last week.

I’ll definitely be touring less at these cost.

While not nearly as "safe" for the bike, you can sometimes ship via Greyhound pretty cheap.  Other times it is outrageous.  Can't figure out their algorithm but when shipping, I do check them.

Thanks, I’ll check into them. With 4 shipments needed this year, my cost just went from $280 to $632.

I guess ShipBikes decision has something to do with the issues in Ukraine. I don’t follow the news enough to know/care what that has to do with FedEx.

Edit: Checked Greyhound and it was only $7 less than BikeFlights but with a 2 week delivery. I’m debating canceling my two tours this year now due to the cost. I’m on a strict budget and an additional $350 is going to strain that a bit.

Too bad.  I got turned off to Bikeflights after it switched to UPS both for price and for service reasons.  Using BF in 2019 was the first time I had used it since they switched to UPS.  Price-wise, the pick up option from the LBS that packed my bike was $10 compared to $5 just two years before (and before the switch).  I actually never paid the fee the previous three times when BF used FedEx because there was a FedEx/Kinko's location around the corner from the shop.  And employee would walk it around the corner and drop it off for me for free.  When I got home from the trip I priced what shipping would have cost with Shipbikes using FedEx.  It was noticeably less expensive. Shipping time quote was longer with BF post-swtich to UPS.

I feel that BF got more "corporate", for lack of a better term, as it got more popular.  You used to not have to create an account with a password.  Customer service was more responsive.  What really frustrated me in 2019 was when I was trying to buy return shipping while on tour the web site would not accept the correct zip code for the Missoula, MT REI.  I could not rightly call about the problem because I was in the Whitefish library.  I finally gave up and used the zip code the website suggested.  Fortunately, everything worked out in that respect.  But there was another problem.  I got an email from BF saying pickup failed on the scheduled day.  After a couple of emails and a phone call I found out that pickup had not actually failed.  BF could not explain why it had sent me that message.

Update: ShipBikes is still down as of today. In a recent email, they stated rising fuel cost as the reason they’re not offering shipping at this time.

I remember when I could send my bike to a bike shop for $30 -
And have them set up up for $15 or $20.
Can't remember whether it was 1947 or 1948.
