Fellow cyclists - I have a once in a lifetime opportunity to work remotely during the month of February. I'd like to find an area of the country where there are extensive bicycling opportunities. Basically I'm looking for an area that I could rent an apartment M-F and then cycle to my heart's content in the surrounding region - maybe a radius of 120 miles ( a couple hours drive) during the weekend. I know this is an odd request but I'm reaching out to the cycling community to help me think outside of the box. Thanks - Steve
Just got back from a 7500 mile motorcycle ride exploring tons of good roads in the Southwest.
The area around Silver City, NM would be a smaller town answer to your question that boasts a University, 3 bike shops, and great riding from your front door - from flattish desert to alpine style roads used in the Tour de Gila. (If you're after internet without the big city, take a look at a long-term stay in the Bear Creek cabins at Pinos Altos, just north of Silver City - also home to a great restaurant in the Buckhorn Saloon, though not much else.)
It would help to know, however, what style of riding you enjoy - Mountain biking? Weekend camping in the national forests? Do you like the idea of a big city with a velodrome (San Diego)? How much driving are you really willing to do to get to a ride?
