Cycling Florida's East Coast.

If you are cycling from North Florida south to Key West, or from Key West North in Florida, I advise you to stay on the island roads. ACA Maps you along the Barrier Islands and I advise you take that route. It's a much nicer ride. Less noise than US1. Much nicer neighborhoods in some areas including Mar-A-Lago where Donald Trump lives. The Barrier Island roads are the way to go. You can take aca's advice or mine, or learn the hard way. Another choice is US1 on the mainland but I do not recommend it.

First post. I've been away from the touring scene for a while.

Anyway…

I agree that following the coast road is the better option. On occasion, one will need to jog inland a bit to work around inlets and cuts and so forth. From Fort Lauderdale north to the Mayport ferry, or even up to Fernandina Beach, cyclists can enjoy a very nice ride.

Your advice holds doubly true for the stretch from West Palm Beach thru Miami. This is a congested metropolitan area and it is best to hug the coastline as much as possible.
