John, adventurepdx and all others.  I appreciate your comments and will take them to heart. I can certainly appreciate John's comments on wishing the internet could convey inflextion and the tone of one's comments. If so, I would have hoped you would have been able to determine that I wasn't trying to be snarky or critical. Just somewhat curious.  Anyway, again my apologies to anyone I've offended. I've always been a firm believer in riding your own ride and doing what makes you happy. I've learned a lot from this forum and have tremendous respect for the exprets on it. The last thing I would want to do is offend anyone. To that end, perhaps adventurepdx or anyone else who wishes to can suggest an appropriate "buddy" for me. Perhaps something along the line of a goat, maybe a troll or perhaps a grinch. But, perhaps, most apprepriate would be if you could find a "jackass" buddy for me.

Best wishes,

hikerjer

This is Marvin.  We found him face down in the road in Alexandria, MN.  We took him home, helped him get off drugs and gave him a job.  He still wants to ray-gun entire states, but we've hidden his weapon.

I'll take "Whimsy" for 500, Alex. An odd or fanciful humor, oddly out of the ordinary. In bike touring, whimsy is allowed.

My critter type riding buddy
has been a postcard picture of a little fox.
Thus, his name is Foxie.
Foxie always fits prominently in my handlebar bag,
where he and I can keep an eye on one another,
just in front of my ACA Maps
& a New Testament (my other buddy).

As my momma said, sometimes if you can't say something nice, it is better to say nothing at all.  We all of our own little idiosyncrasies.
Reminds me of the story about the older woman at a party who said "if you can't say something nice about someone.... come sit by me."

 :)

During our group Northern Tier tour someone found a toy dinosaur that would get placed on a different person's bike each day until someone accidentally lost it while riding.

On the last day of the trip, we passed a guy who was also finishing up in Bar Harbor.  He had dozens of child's toy figures affixed to his bike.  He told us he had found them all on the road while riding.

A stowaway on our 2009 TransAm tour ...

edit: Well dang! I emailed the above rider in South Africa to clarify. He says it was a one time photo-op and creature did not make the entire tour. Made a cute picture though!
