Camping Along Pacific Coast Route
« on: January 26, 2022, 01:13:42 pm »
Hi,
I am planning to cycle the Pacific Coast Route sometime this year.     Would anyone have any comments on when the campgrounds open for the season or whether they operate year round?   Many thanks.

I think many do close in the off season.  Some close at times even during the normal open season.  I ran into one or two that were closed in September the year I rode it.  Always check ahead.

Stormy weather the wind blows the wrong way.  Same for much of the off season I am told.

Go when it is nice.  Wet weather would suck.  Wind in your face would too.  Summer is nice.  After Labor Day traffic drops off making it a great time to go.

Oregon has been pretty consistent about its parks' opening dates and hiker/biker sites.
Many Oregon parts were, however, closed or had severely reduced services during the past two years of Covid.

California, on the other hand, is another story.
They have been starving the state park service of funds for more than a decade.
Sometimes, late openings or closures are not announced.
- i.e. the hiker/biker loop was closed and the rest of the park full.
That happened to us once at Sunset State Beach south of Santa Cruz.

With Covid still ongoing, I would carefully verify both Oregon and Calif. parks.
But especially California.

Here is a CA state Park website that gives information about each park. You can click on each state park to find out open/close dates, etc. https://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=1029
