Need STRONG 135mm hub for Surly long haul trucker.

I need a hub that will work on the long haul trucker that can handle a total bike/rider/gear weight of at least 400lbs.

I also need it to work in the extreme cold and I know the free hub on Shimano hubs stops working around 20F.

I am planning on using a tiagra triple with it. 10 speed is fine.

What would you recommend? I know phil wood tops out at only 280lbs.

Is 400lbs a typo?

If not you're going to need specialist racks and panniers too!

I travel pretty heavy ( about 110 - 130 kg total) and regularly take rough roads. I have the Ryde Anda rims, 36 spoke hand made by SJS in the UK. The only problem I had was when I foolishly fell into a drain. I've a Shimano hub on the rear and a Son Dynohub on the front.

As regards any "specialist" hubs such as the Phil Woods bear in mind the need to be able to service them on the road. Personally, I'd prefer to have something that can be serviced/adjusted/bodged to keep me going.

I have ridden on Shimano hubs all my life (also have a SON Dynamo now) and ride in New England in the winter and never had a problem with my hubs freezing. I also ride a Disc Trucker as one of my bikes.

I would recommend reading this article about Leonard Zinn building a bicycle that would hold up to a 350lb rider. Then I would contact Zinn Cycles and get them to build your wheels.

Rohloff's boast a maximal wheel load of 330 pounds. One of my wheel builds for my old Surly KM is a Rohloff 135 mm solid axle with Andra 40 rims, and I bet I could do 400 pounds per wheel..., but I wouldn't want to hit a big bump.

Strikes me that when you're wheel load is that high, you should be reviewing the threads on trailers.... The wheels might handle the load, but as noted above, you'll also need a specialty frame and racks such as a cargo bike.

That is only if you lube the mechanism with grease.  Use a light oil like Tri-Flow and they will work at much lower temperatures.   That won't sacrifice durability either.  I have a Dura Ace FH-7700 hub with 80,000+ miles that is in perfect condition and has only seen Tri-Flow for the freehub mechanism.

I would suggest to look for wheelsets built for tandems. As I recall tandems often have 48 hole rims and very sturdy hubs. Try to google tandem manufacturers and see what the specs are. I think Phil Wood are making tandem hubs.
