Sierra Cascades Section 2 Continuing road closures Sept. 2022

The Cascade Lakes scenic byway is completely closed, due to work in progress after wildfires, from Bend till crescent cutoff. You have to cycle about 65 miles on the 97, which is hell on earth. Take care!

Here's a link to a paved detour around the closures. This 91.9-mile paved route begins on map 22, and uses US 26, US 97, and smaller county roads to rejoin the main route east of Sisters on map 26.

Got that. If we had known that before, it would have saved us about 50 kms of detour.
But the route on ridewithgps shows a different detour, from Detroit northeast bound. We cycled that one, the closure starts about 8 kms after Detroit, and lasts about 6 kms till the top, but, as being told by locals, only for cars. We even saw 2 motorcycles coming across.

Hi Carla,

Do you have some more information on the road closures on the Sierra Cascade route (Section 1-5)? To me it seems that the route north of Detroit (map 22 and 23) is open for cyclists again. The information provided by the USFS seems overwhelming and confusing.

Another person mentions a wild fire closure around San Bernadino (2022). What is the update here? https://forums.adventurecycling.org/index.php?topic=17465.0

No, we haven't heard or received any more information on the road closures which we posted in the online map updates and corrections pages in June 2021. https://www.adventurecycling.org/routes-and-maps/adventure-cycling-route-network/map-updates-and-corrections/?routeAddendaaction=mucDisplay:main.results&id=796&mRoute=27&mSection=94#mucResults
That page has links to the Mt. Hood and Willamette National forests. If you go to those links there are phone numbers you can call to get the most current information.

I suggest when you call them to have your Section 2 map open to see maps 22, 23 and 24 so you can ask specific questions.

And we haven't heard anything about the Radford Fire which was posted last fall. The fire was 100% contained so I would assume SR 38 is open. You can call the San Bernadino County Sheriff's office to ask about the status of the highway, 760-868-1006.
