Atlantic Coast Sec 02 Road Closure Oct. 2022
« on: October 17, 2022, 10:59:07 am »
On Atlantic Coast Sec 02 northwest of the town of Belvidere, there is a road closure on Riverton Rd. which is expected to be closed until February 2023. There is a 3 mi. detour around this section that is signed and follows low trafficked rural roads. This detour can be found here: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/41236368. For more information and updates call Upper Mount Bethel Township at 570-897-6127.

The other thing you can do, and which I have taken to doing whenever I ride that way, is to:

1.  Cross the river from Portland, PA into Columbia, NJ using the bike/pedestrian bridge.  The entrance is right by the old railroad depot, just north of the small gas station/food mart.  (Look upriver as you cross the bridge to catch site of the Delaware Viaduct that connects to the Paulinskill Viaduct.  When the Paulinskill Viaduct opened in 1910, it was largest reinformed concrete structure in the world.  Portland is the home town of the man who wrote "All I want for Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth.")

2.  Make the first right onto Washington St. and merge onto U.S. 46.  U.S. 46 has some traffic, but the mostly ample shoulder is in good condition. (Last rode it in 2021.)

3.  At the traffic light, bear right onto Manunka Chunk Rd. and take that until it curves left and becomes Market St. Cross Water St. and you will be back on route.  (It's worth taking a spin around the town square in Belvidere to see some of the restored Victorian houses. It's also a nice spot of a lunch break.
Skoogy's Deli on Greenwich St., just south of Front St., has good sandwiches and other stuff and will fill your bottles and let you use the restroom.)

The advantage to this route is that it eliminates the climbing (and some bad sight lines) on the PA side of the river.  U.S. 46 is nearly flat, except for a couple of gentle inclines.

Reverse the above if heading north.

I have ridden Bikelicious’ route numerous times in the past few years. Rte 46 has a lot of traffic morning & evening rush hours. But the shoulders are wide. It’s quicker than the normal route.

Also a lot of cyclists use Rte. 519 instead of River Rd. / Foul Rift Rd. south of Belvidere.   Because of less hills and wide shoulders and it’s faster if you need to make time. But doesn’t have the scenic narrow country lane feel.

I saw on the news today that this section north of Belvidere NJ (on the Pennsylvania side) will be closed for a much much longer period now. The rock cliff has had more rocks fall.

Now more bad news has Rte. 611 into the Delaware Water Gap National Recreational Area had a rockslide. It looks like it will be closed until August. Rte. 611 on the Monroe County border just south of Water Gap, Pennsylvania.
