Pedal recommendation?
« on: May 22, 2025, 12:53:18 pm »
Hi,
I'm looking for a pedal that is:
* Good quality with serviceable bearings
* Wide
* Will take a toe-clip

I've got big feet and wear low hikers for touring. The soles are about 110 mm at widest point. I'm an old-schooler who prefers toe clips.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.
Doug

IF you can find them on eBay, an old pair of Phil Wood Pedals might work.

Old school - indestructable Campagnolo Record. The only trick is find an old wrench that takes the cap off.
I thought about a Campy Super Record (cheaper now than when new!).  However, since the OP said he wanted a wide pedal, I thought the outboard "hook" might prevent a wide shoe from working.  Most quality pedals from back then had that hook so that is why I thought of a Phil Wood CHP Pedal.  But those Campy pedals sure are nice.

John - on the money, as usual.

Only problem with the CHPs was that one couldn't use both sides of the platform - not that the flip side of the Campys was a secure platform either.

I didn't recommend the Super Records because I saw a few broken ones come into the shop, and they didn't seem appropriate for touring.

There is always the old Campagnolo track pedals - a little harder to find - but the platform might not be as wide as desired.

The high quality mountain bike pedals that would take clips have disappeared, though there are some cheap versions still around that are not likely appropriate for touring, but I haven't looked at this for a while and not sure if one is using clips, they want all the spikes that litter most MTB pedals these days.

Thanks for the ideas, guys. I was surprised when I began looking that I wasn't finding any obvious options. Interesting the way these trends play out. Sometimes justified by better solutions, though sometimes seems like herd mentality.

Keep the suggestions coming!
Cheers,
Doug

will also take a toe clip with long strap.
