APP vs GPX download
« on: September 26, 2024, 04:22:07 pm »
It seems rather confusing and arbitrary that ACA offers two non-overlapping ways to download their maps; either the iOS/Android app or a *.gpx file.  As a newbie to the ACA, it isn't clear which I'll end up preferring (even with the provided table of pros and cons).  Generally, I am cautious about being locked into an app and would prefer to have the flexibility of *.gpx files, however I don't have any experience of how well the *gpx files work with 3rd party apps or if I will be missing valuable points of interest.

Basically, I don't understand why ACA doesn't give access to both for the price of a map.  (Or have a premium version that allows both.). It seems to be an artificial and awkward division to have these two formats that are innately incompatible.  I suspect that the ACA will eventually merge these offerings or drop one because it seems inefficient.  I'd be interested to know which horse to bet on.

Thanks,
Jay

Hi Jay,

We are actually currently working in partnership with Ride With GPS to create a new app experience for Adventure Cycling routes within Ride With GPS. We are working hard to have as many routes as possible available for purchase in the new system by the end of the year. If you do not have an immediate need for a digital route, we are advising folks to hold off on purchasing.

With the new Ride with GPS app, gpx files will be included, so one purchase will get you both. Paper maps will continue to be sold separately.

Thanks,
Amy Wally

Thank you for the rapid response, Amy!

I've been learning and enjoying Ride With GPS, so it will be great to have your maps interfaced with that app.  Looking forward to it!

Thanks again,
Jay
