Lake Champlain circuit route questions
« on: November 18, 2024, 12:53:30 pm »
I've started planning a Lake Champlain circuit ride for next year, likely mid-June.  At the northern end, the route crosses into Canada near Rouses Point on Rte 11 and back again near Alburg on Rte 225 (different highway numbers in Canada).  I have two questions (many more likely to come!).

1) How are these entries for bicyclists?

2) Google maps showed Rte 225 closed at the crossing.  Was there construction? Or was the crosssing closed?

While I can't help you with direct knowledge, for me personally, when I am considering something that is critical like info on a border crossing, I call the specific crossing directly.

Also, when I reviewed the crossing (in bicycle mode), it showed the crossings were closed in the winter but if you call the Alburgh Port of Entry crossing, they could probably give you the correct info as to VT-225.

I have noticed over the years that you will not get accurate Google Map directions if the road is closed at that time.  For instance, US-212 is closed between Red Lodge, MT, and Cooke City, MT.  If you try to route it, it directs you via I-90 instead of just staying on US-212.  However, if you come back in the summer time, it routes fine.

Hope this helps at least a little bit.  Tailwinds, John

My experience is in the far west (Montana, Idaho, Washington) but generally border crossing by bicycle is just fine.

I wouldn't try to bring fresh fruits, vegetables, or uncooked meat across the border though.

This covers most of what you'd need to know:

I've never been asked for documentation about my bike or any gear I was carrying with me.

Thanks. I'll try calling people at the customs office, if I can find a contact number. I just thought somebody on this forum may have first hand knowledge already.  Still have 7 months to sort stuff out.

Just zoom onto the customs office (or any business for that matter) you want to call and click on it.  There is almost always a phone number to call.

I have made that crossing, though it was 10 years ago.  It was simple and painless, probably the easiest entry to Canada that I’ve ever done on a bike.  We returned via Rouses Point a few hours later, also no issues, though US customs are always sterner and ask more questions.

Thanks, all. I called the customs offices at the crossing and it sounds like entry/exit on a bicycle will be straightforward. I also found out that the hours for the crossings are being reduced from 24 hours per day to 12 next year.

If you want a quiet road, maybe cross just before closing time if the timing permits.  Hope you have a wonderful tour.
