... Cheap motels are out there and not often, from what I have seen, to be found advertising on Google. I think some are dodging the tax man. ...

Funny you should mention that.  I've noticed quite often at the less expensive motels that the credit card machine is "broken" and they only are accepting cash that day.

All the cheap motels I have ever seen made me wish I was carrying a gun!  But if you don't mind paying for a cheap date that's half to fully baked out of her mind you might like places like that...of course they only accept cash, they don't carry card readers, well, at least not yet!

Some of the cheap motels I saw made me wish I was carrying a flamethrower, hand grenades, claymore mines, an M60 machine gun, and 200 yards of concertina wire.

About daily costs in Long distance bicycle touring. In 1994 in Ukraine, free-camping, eating in restaurants and from food stores, it cost less than $3.00 a day. Extremely extremely low compared to Western Europe, the United States, Canada. All the other standards by which we define civilization were also correspondingly extremely extremely low. I had read that such places existed on this planet. I expected to find such abysmally horrible conditions beginning in some place like Pakistan or India. If I had known then what I know now, I would not ever have gone anywhere near the former Soviet Republic of Ukraine, not on a bicycle, not in a car. I had a conversation with a woman I knew briefly in Stuart Florida. She asked me this. Do you think you would like to go back and visit again in Ukraine? I said yes, in a tank with a flamethrower. That really was the conversation.

One reason I like eating in diners, etc. along the way is to experience the local cuisine.  Another, is, no dishes to wash.

In 2007 I did Oregon to Indiana 2226 miles in 22 days. I spent $8 per day. This consisted of one galon of milk one box of cereal per day and coffee at every McDonalds on the route. I lost between 22 and 33 pounds on the trip. It took about 3 months to regain the weight. I have found if I average 55 miles a day I do not lose any weight. I did not spend any money on parts.

What kind of cereal?  Where did you buy it?  Was this boxed wal mart cereal?
