I will find the quarters. To me a laundry facility in a motel/hotel is the completion of the trifecta: hot shower/bed to sleep in/ clean clothes for the next morning!

Also:

  • Within walking distance of a decent grocery store, bike shop, and outdoor store
  • The motel has a pump, some bike tools, a work stand, and a hose available for cyclists
  • A really good hotel breakfast

It would be nice if someone compiled a list of bike touring-friendly lodging and campgrounds.  Because getting caught at one of the non-bike friendly ones is a bummer.

One of the biggest cyclist-unfriendly things I encounter at motels is that many of them do not allow you to keep your bike(s) in your room.  And they rarely offer any kind of secure bike storage as a substitute.  The other is multi-floor lodgings with no elevator.

For years, I have said that ACA should expand their Member Benefits section, especially in light of the recent huge price increase/service decrease.

I have said they should try to find restaurants, hotels (more than just Motel 6), campgrounds, bike shops, tourist sites, etc. along ACA Routes that will give a discount to cyclists.  Those would be shown with a symbol on the ACA Maps and/or a window sticker or something.  Sure it would cost a couple thousand dollars to do the research by mailing local Visitor Info centers/Town hall along the various routes and have them ask their local businesses but the Members would easily recover the costs. Other ideas are to get an airline to waive the bicycle baggage fee (or 1 checked bag fee) for cyclists, car rental, Amtrak, etc.

I've only run across this twice; both times the owners were very helpful in finding someplace to keep and lock our bikes.

Of the last 67 times I've stayed in a motel on a bicycle tour, I've been denied keeping my bicycle in my room zero times. I never ask. I just do it.

A really good hotel breakfast

What they called breakfast in some motels was the cheapest, health altering, junk food. It was no good. They advertise What? Continental breakfast. Well, I traveled the European continent quite a lot extensively---bicycle, train, car, bus. I do not recall ever being served that kind of _____ anywhere. Small, ultra-sugared cupcakes? That is a breakfast. What they say is anything edible is breakfast. Some have signs they say, "Under new management." But, so what? It is a place for the night.

I've had superb hotel breakfasts included at a number of places over the years.

The good ones will have AYCE bacon, eggs (sometimes even made-to-order eggs and omelets), pancakes, toast, potatoes, &c.  And bottomless tankards of good coffee.  And usually you can top up on the way out with bananas, apples, granola bars, and cookies.

Post-pandemic the quality of hotel breakfasts has drastically declined, to be sure.

I don't know if this has been mentioned, but consider the money you are not spending while touring.  I am confident that my food expenditures decreases when on the road because I don't eat out of the freezer and microwave at home.  (You don't find me grilling a $15 whole fish in camp like you would at home.)  My utility costs drop.  No need for bus fare or gas.  My "entertainment" expenses are less.  On the flip side, I often pay a cat sitter when a good friend can't do it for free.  Fortunately, I have another friend who lives close, works cheap, and sends me great photos and videos of my boy.
