Hipcamp?

I’ve had variable experiences with privately owned campgrounds.  Everything between superb and well worth the extra money to a vicious ripoff.

Sometimes I see quite reasonable prices on Hipcamp and wonder if anyone has used them for bicycle travel.

I’ve seen prices from a modest and reasonable $14 and a just crazy $200.  Which has to be a typo.

We used it last summer  when we crossed the US.  I think it was in Illinois.  It was a farm. Had running  water and a porty potty. It was a walk from where we camped. But it was the only option in the area.

I don't know that $200 has to be a typo.  In 2021 I was preparing to reprise a trip I did from northern VT home to PA.  When I checked prices at a KOA in Nothingspecial, NY I had stayed at in 2018, the place wanted $102 for a tent site.  Hard pass.  I went off route a few miles and paid far less than that for a nice, riverside sight with water and power.

I know there are some places that are charging $50-$60 per night for very basic camping.  Pit toilets, no potable water, no other amenities.

My other pet peeve is places that charge you ridiculous amounts for a shower, laundry, or charging your phone.  I think $5 for a small load of laundry is a bit much and $10 is straight-up robbery.
