Northern Tier Section 3 maps 44-46 - 2026-27

Resurfacing and construction will significantly affect Highway 200 between Jordan and Brockway in Montana. Several portions of the roadway will be gravel during this time.

Bicycles are strongly recommended to avoid the area. In the past, some contractors ferried cyclists through on pilot trucks, but with two different contractors this year with different traffic control plans, coordination could be challenging.

Jordan to Miles City on MT 59 is 83 miles with no services and no water.  For Miles City to Glendive, Terry has all services. The rest area on I-94 at exit 192 has been closed recently due to construction, not sure if it will be open during summer 2026. ACA Lewis and Clark Trail Section 8 also covers the Miles City to Glendive section of this detour.  As of March 2026, there is 7 miles of gravel on MT 200 around the MT 24 intersection. The gravel will expand to 14 miles when the construction starts on the next section this spring.

I taught in Miles City for three years.  Highway 59 is very challenging.
Not only is there the distance and lack of services,
but the speed limit is 70 mph with most people going 80.
Yes, the traffic is light, but that causes drivers' attention to wander.
Also, there are limited to no shoulders most of the way.

On July 5 my wife drove me westbound across the section under repair, based on these posts and conversations with two eastbound cyclists I met earlier.  On a Sunday the construction crews were not working.
From the car the surface did not look bad at all.  I have ridden worse unpaved roads since I left Maine, although much shorter, of course.  Any cyclist comfortable riding on dirt should be able to make it across, unless the construction crews do not allow it.
The two cyclists I met said they were able to hitch rides with passing motorists.
